A new hospital for a new century
At the beginning of the 21st Century, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau embarked on the complex process of relocating to its third premises since it was founded more than 600 years ago. The construction of the new Hospital was undertaken in response to new healthcare needs and building started in 2000 in the northern part of the Sant Pau premises, on the corner of Mas Casanovas street and Sant Quintí street. This building consists of a main central block, which is principally the site of outpatient services (36,022 m2), from which four inpatient wings emanate like fingers (46,878 m2).
In terms of its healthcare activities, the Hospital has an outstanding record in several areas, and is considered to set the standard in its field of operation. The centre treats over 35,500 inpatients each year and some 160,000 emergencies. Approximately more than 460,000 outpatient appointments are scheduled each year and the day hospital treats over 97,000 users. There are 135 day hospital points, 548 beds and 22 surgical rooms.
Teaching activities at the Hospital have a broad scope: the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Medicine Department Teaching Unit, Escola Universitària d'Infermeria, (University College of Nursing), participation in specialist healthcare training programmes, study placements, lifelong learning, etc.
In the field of research, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is one of the leading centres in Spain, as can be appreciated from the volume of papers published and their impact, the number and quality of projects which receive funding and the grants awarded. Since 2009, the efforts of the Institut de Recerca (Research Institute) and other new organizations in the area have combined to create the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques Sant Pau (IIB Sant Pau- Institute of Biomedical Research), accredited by the Ministry of Science and Innovation since early 2011.
