FUNCTIONAL UNITS
SYSTEMIC AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE FUNCTIONAL UNIT (UFMAS)

Systemic autoimmune diseases (SADs) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies essentially caused by a loss of tolerance of the immune system. They can affect different organs of the people that have them.

May SADs are considered minority diseases, but they usually affect people of productive age and can cause high morbidity and mortality. Given the highly heterogeneous nature of the different SADs, the possible involvement of different organs and their potential severity, cross-cutting consultation processes, experts and rapid and flexible assistance are all required to provide an appropriate clinical-therapeutic response and improve prognoses.

Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has a long history of care and research in managing the different SADs and their complications. Its organisation in functional units helps it to manage and bring uniformity to healthcare, providing patients with a holistic approach and excellent care.

Given the need for cross-cutting approaches to provide optimal care, the healthcare system for patients with SADs falls within the functional unit structure of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.

Functional units apply a healthcare model that brings different professionals together (specialists, case managers, etc.) who participate in the same clinical process in a shared space for working and making decisions to improve patient care.

This healthcare model proposes a paradigm shift in daily care activity and is based on agendas defined by processes, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary organisation, consensual decision-making and integrated resource management.

The functional units of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau are based on organisational agreements between the different professionals and services to provide users with a unique, orderly and staggered response according to criteria of efficiency and quality.

HEALTHCARE PROCESS

For systemic autoimmune diseases, the healthcare process is included in the Functional Unit of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases (UFMAS). The UFMAS of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is currently one of the six expert units accredited by the Catalan Ministry of Health for caring for these patients in the Network of Units of Clinical Expertise (XUEC), in addition to being one of the Spanish Ministry of Health’s seven “Centres, Services and Units of Reference” (CSUR) for these pathologies.

The UFMAS pursues its healthcare activity in different spaces as patients require:

• External Consultations (Block A, floor 2, Module 2)
• Multipurpose Day Hospital (Block A, floor 0, Module 3)
• Hospitalisation Area (Block B, floor 0)
